HEADLANDS CENTER FOR THE ARTS

Recipient of the 2010 - 2011 Tournesol Award, Jack Leamy brings an innovative vision to the figurative tradition of painting. Often using his wife and young son as protagonists in the projected field of human drama, Leamy addresses larger cultural and historical ideas through personally derived imagery and motifs while maintaining the expressionistic and resonant qualities of abstraction. Leamy earned a BFA at Pratt Institute and an MFA at the San Francisco Art Institute, where he received the 2010 Irene Pijoan Memorial Painting Award. He has exhibited works at the Cottage Industry Painting Salon, Mission Cultural Center, Swell Gallery, and elsewhere in San Francisco and nationally.

January 2011 Second Saturday

CALL AND RESPONSE

Opening Reception: Saturday, January 8, 7-10pm

Exhibition Dates: January 5 - 29, 2011

Gallery Hours: Wednesday - Saturday, 2-6pm (or by appointment)

In music, call and response refers to two successive and distinct phrases usually played by different musicians, a conversation-like exchange of musical statements, one being the call, and the other the response. The paintings in this exhibition were created through a visual call & response between artists chosen by local artist Robert Minervini.

The exhibition features the work of 10 painters from around the country. Participants were asked to step outside their usual studio practice and engage with another artist. The paintings featured were created during a four-month period of conversation and experimentation. Each pair of artists set their own guidelines for their collaboration based on location, previous histories, and artistic background. This exhibition is the culmination of those collaborations.

It is the hope of the curator that this exhibition will create a platform for discussion about the role of autonomy, community, influence, and the self in the arts, as well as shed light on the creative process.
